Peritubular membrane potential in kidney proximal tubular cells of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR-Okamoto strain adult rats) was measured with conventional 3 mol KCl microelectrodes, in vivo. Peritubular cell membrane potential was not different in SHR (-66.5 ± 0.7 mV) as compared with normotensive control Wistar rats (-67.5 ± 1.2 mV). To test the effects of possible altered sodium membrane transport in SHR on proximal tubule peritubular membrane potential, we allowed SHR and control rats to drink 1% NaCl for two weeks. Again, proximal tubule peritubular membrane potential was not different in SHR on 1% NaCl (-67.0 ± 1.0 mV) as compared with control rats on 1% NaCl (-64.7 ± 1.3 mV). From these results we concluded that peritubular membrane potential in kidney proximal tubular cells of SHR was not different from normotensive Wistar control rats, and if some alteration of sodium transport in kidney proximal tubular cells of SHR could exist, that was not possible to evaluate from the measurements of peritubular membrane potential in kidney proximal tubular cells.
Lymphangioma is a malformation composed of a mass of dilated lymph vessels typically found in the cervical region in children. Mediastinal lymphangioma is a rare condition and accounts for 0.01% to 4.5% of all mediastinal tumors. Only 4 cases of mediastinal lymphangioma involving the heart and great vessels in adults have been described in the available literature. Extremely rarely, lymphangiomas occur as a generalized lymphangiomatosis. We present a case of a woman who coughed up small amounts of fresh blood during 6 months and showed signs of cardiac failure. Several years previously, the patient underwent surgical removal of cystic lymphangiomas from the left ovary, both fallopian tubes and small intestine. A chest radiograph showed an 8-cm round shadow located in the middle lobe. A computerized tomography (CT) scan of the chest with contrast verified the existence of a cyst in the anterior mediastinum. The radiologist suggested that the cyst could have originated in the pericardium. One small cyst also appeared in the projection of the left cardiophrenic sinus. A CT scan with contrast of the patient’s abdomen showed multiple cystic formations in the liver, spleen, kidneys, and left parapelvic region. A fine-needle biopsy of the mediastinal tumor verified the cystic lymphangioma, which was then completely removed surgically. A pathohistological examination confirmed the existence of cystic lymphangioma. The patient was discharged after a period of recovery.
The mildest inflammatory changes postoperatively were found in the staple group followed by those in the Hem-O-Lok group.
This paper describes the design and initial evaluation of Dewey, a do-it-yourself (DIY) robot prototype aimed to help users manage break-taking in the workplace. We describe the application domain, prototyping and technical implementation, and evaluation of Dewey in a real office environment to show how research using simple prototypes can provide valuable insights into user needs and practices at the early stages of socially assistive robot design.
Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) is becoming an indispensable tool to non-invasively study tumor characteristics. However, many different DCE-analysis methods are currently being used. To compare and validate different methods, histology is the gold standard. For this purpose, exact co-localization between histology and MRI images is a prerequisite. In this study a methodology is developed to validate DCE-data with histology with an emphasis on correct registration of DCE-MRI and histological data. A pancreatic tumor was grown in a rat model. The tumor was dissected after MR imaging, embedded in paraffin, and cut into thin slices. These slices were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, digitized and stacked in a 3D volume. Next, the 3D histology was registered to ex-vivo SWI-weighted MR images, which in turn were registered to in-vivo SWI and DCE images to achieve correct co-localization. Semi-quantitative and quantitative parameters were calculated. Preliminary results suggest that both pharmacokinetic and heuristic DCE-parameters can discriminate between vital and non-vital tumor regions. The developed method offers the basis for an accurate spatial correlation between DCE-MRI derived parametric maps and histology, and facilitates the evaluation of different DCE-MRI analysis methods.
