Nowadays, bottled water has become part of the lifestyle, replacing tap water, and water from freestanding dispensers is increasingly being used. The main goal of this research was to determine the health suitability of bottled water in freestanding dispensers. The research included the microbiological analysis of a total of 100 samples of bottled water from freestanding dispensers. The samples were mostly taken in the wider area of the city of Doboj (doctor's offices, shops, public buildings), and one dispenser in the city of Tuzla. Water samples were taken twice, in the period from April to June 2022. Water samples from 6 different manufacturers (Vivia, Kristal, Nevra, Gora, Aqua doria, Aqua team) were analyzed. 9% of water samples (9/100) were microbiologically correct. Microbiologically defective samples contained a higher total number of bacteria at 22°C and 37°C, as well as a higher number of coliform bacteria than the maximum allowed values. No significant differences in microbiological quality were found between older and/or recently installed water dispensers, as well as in terms of environmental conditions, while visible differences were observed between dispensers that were regularly hygienically maintained.KEYWORDS:dispensers; bottled water; coliform bacteria; biofilms; total bacteria count

Molecular-genetic diagnostics of polygenic diseases is a new and interesting area in laboratory diagnostics, especially in the area of cardiovascular diseases, as one of the leading causes of mortality in the world population. Aims: The aim of the paper was to analyse variants of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene (NOS3) (Glu298Asp/G894T) in the human population of Tuzla Canton in relation to cardiovascular diseases. Study Design: The study included 112 respondents of both sexes over 18 years old. The experimental group for the analysis of the polymorphism (Glu298Asp) of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene included 56 respondents of both sexes with cardiovascular disease (hypertension), while the control group comprised 56 healthy respondents of both sexes without a prior history of cardiovascular disease (sample/control). Place and Duration of Study: Blood sampling was performed at Medical Center "Plava Poliklinika", “Plava Medical Group”, Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics, Tuzla. DNA isolation and molecular-genetic analysis of the samples were performed in Laboratory for scientific research at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Tuzla. Methodology: The genotyping of eNOS Glu298Asp polymorphism for all respondents was determined by an optimized method based on PCR-RFLP reaction. Results: In the total sample of respondents, the highest genotype frequencies of the eNOS gene were recorded for the GG genotype (53.5%) and the GT genotype (35.7%). The lowest frequency was recorded for the TT genotype, which was 10.8%. Conclusion: The results obtained in the study provide good guidelines for further study of a molecular-genetic association between a high number of gene candidates and cardiovascular diseases, which will contribute to the incorporation of these results into the existing regional and European genetic database.

Aim of this paper was to determine the frequency of congenital anomalies in a sample of newborns of Tuzla Canton and as well as their distribution according to gender, mother’s age and marital distance category. Research was undertaken using the retrospective analysis on the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics of University Clinical Center in Tuzla. By analyzing medical documentation of 17223 newborns, we determined the frequency of congenital anomalies of 5.24%. Highest frequency of congenital anomalies was found in the newborns whose mothers are older than 35. It was found that the frequency of congenital anomalies in the observed population is within the range of variation of this parameter with data from the literature.

UDK: 574.5:579.68(285)(497.6) In the spring and summer season of 2014, the change in the number of coliform and heterotrophic bacteria in specific localities of lake Bistarac and lake Vidara were observed and analyzed. Lake Bistarac was formed after the cessation of surface mining in the open pit, while lake Vidara is the artificial lake in the area of Gradacac made in order to protect the industrial zone of flooding. Both of these lakes, placed in Tuzla Canton, are very attractive for tourist and frequently are used for swimming, fishing and recreation. Results of this study showed an increased number of coliform bacteria in both periods, and the presence of Escherichia coli as a direct indicator of fecal pollution, while, as an additional indicator of fecal pollution, Citrobacter and Enterobacter were identified. From the total number of analyzed water samples of the lake Bistarac, 60% of samples belonged into to the second class, and 40% into the first class of water quality. Lake Vidara showed poor quality as the 80% of the analysed samples belonged to the second class and only 20% into the first class of water quality. For the microbiological assessment of the water quality standard microbiological procedures and methods were used. One of the main reasons for poor hygienic state of these two lakes is unregulated sewage network of the villages, restaurants and camping areas placed near the lakes. The increased number of fecal bacteria was found in the water of both lakes, which can be highly dangerous for the human population. Since both lakes are used for recreational purposes it is necessary to establish an appropriate monitoring system on the basis of which is possible to take measures and to protect and improve water quality.

The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of the monitoring study of the frequency of congenital heart disease in newborns in Tuzla Canton (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and their distribution by sex of the newborn and maternal age. The study used the data from the book of protocols and case records of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, the University Clinical Center in Tuzla. The analysis of 8,521 newborns between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2008 has resulted in the frequency of 1.76%, i.e. 1.31% for the mature newborns and 0.45% for the premature newborns respectively. Of the total number of registered anomalies, 10% was associated with congenital anomalies of other systems. No statistically significant differences were found in the subsamples of both mature and premature newborns when it comes to the distribution of congenital heart disease by sex of newborns and maternal age. The frequency registered in the analyzed period suggests the necessity of screening and monitoring congenital heart disease in the observed population.
