The objective of this study was to confirm the effects of curcumin and to investigate the effects of its combination with a reduced dose of rosuvastatin in an adenine-induced model of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associated dyslipidemia in rats. Renal function and morphology, as well as lipid status, were assessed using laboratory parameters and histopathological analysis. Male Wistar rats (n=36) randomly divided into six groups, were treated for 24 days: normal control (standard diet), CKD control (adenine diet, 0.75% w/w adenine-supplemented diet), curcumin (100 mg/kg/day + adenine diet), rosuvastatin minimal therapeutic dose (MTD) (5 mg/day + adenine diet), rosuvastatin reduced dose (RD, 25% of rosuvastatin MTD + adenine diet), and rosuvastatin RD + curcumin (25% of rosuvastatin MTD + curcumin 100 mg/kg/day + adenine diet) group. While rosuvastatin alone showed only antilipemic action, both curcumin alone and its combination with a reduced dose of rosuvastatin showed better renal protection with lower serum creatinine levels and milder renal morphological alterations, as well as better antilipemic action with lower levels of triglycerides, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterols compared with the levels in CKD control rats. Treatment with curcumin alone also resulted in a significantly higher estimated glomerular filtration rate, lower uric acid levels, and higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, while the combined therapy additionally resulted in higher serum albumin levels, lower total cholesterol, and both atherogenic and coronary risk indexes compared with CKD control rats. The results of this study confirmed the beneficial effects of curcumin alone and provided new evidence for the beneficial effects of its combination with a reduced dose of rosuvastatin in rats with CKD and associated dyslipidemia.
Triterpenes are very important secondary metabolites with wide structural diversity and significant role in pharmacy and medicine.In the present research, a comparative study of pharamacological activities of the triterpene fractions obtained from several plant species belonging to Lamiaceae family, was carried out. In-vitro anti-proliferative activity was performed using a standardproliferation assay based on tetrazolium salts. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of triterpene fractions was determined by an assay of inhibition of albumin denaturation. In general, the triterpene fractions obtained from plant species belonging to Lamiaceae family showed a strong anti-proliferative activity and anti-inflammatory activity.The triterpene fraction of Rosmarini folium showed the strongest anti-proliferative activity (GI50range from 4 to 37 μg/ml) and the strongest anti-inflammatory activity in the range from 57.27% to 80.69%. This comparative study provides scientific evidence to support the traditional use of Lamiacae plant species for medical purposes as anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative medicines.
In order to raise and harmonize the quality standards of pharmaceutical studies at the national level of Bosnia and Herzegovina and thus get closer to the implementation and quality assurance of study programs of EU countries, a team of professors from the University of Sarajevo-Faculty of Pharmacy prepared and was awarded the Erasmus+ project IQPharm. IQPharm (Innovating quality assessment tools for pharmacy studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina) aims at capacity building of quality management, and aims to introduce new tools for quality improvement, digitization and modernization of pharmacy studies at public universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including strengthening semi-structured experiential education in line with EU standards and higher education regulations for regulated professions. The introduction of new tools for the assessment of the quality of study programs (KREF) enables the development of evidence-based recommendations for change, modification and innovation of existing methods of knowledge transfer, didactic approaches and curricula. The introduction of a new system of proficiency testing through experiential education (OSCE) sets equal standards at the national level for the learning outcomes of graduate pharmacists. The development of E-platform ensures the digitization and modernization of experiential education management. Experiential education at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be significantly improved through the introduction of the E-platform, by raising the standards of the practice itself and facilitating its implementation by student services, students and their mentors. A special part of this project is the development of free modules, which are extracurricular subjects intended to enrich the knowledge of students and graduates of pharmacy, They should track the labor market trends, and thus make higher education more agile and attractive.
Celiac disease is defined as an autoimmune disorder that is the result of a reaction of adaptive immune response of sensitive individuals, to gluten-containing cereals. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional habits of patients with the diagnosis and people without the diagnosis, to evaluate the importance of adhering to a strict gluten-free diet, recognizing properly declared gluten-free products and to assess the quality of life of people diagnosed with celiac disease. Anthropometric and dietary tests were conducted through a survey by a total of 96 people, 56 respondents were diagnosed with celiac disease, while the remaining 40 respondents were undiagnosed, and of whom 32 were on a gluten-free diet. The majority of respondents (58.92%) have an adequate level of nutrition; however, 30.37% of respondents are overweight, including the degree of obesity in four cases. The most consumed cereals are rice, corn and white ready-made gluten-free flour mixtures, while the respondents consume the least pseudo-cereals, whole grains and micro-cereals. Within the survey CD-QOL (Celiac Disease Quality of Life) we assessed the quality of life, general the attitude of patients according to the given claims related to celiac disease. The obtained results led us to the conclusion that the dietary habits of celiac patients are somewhat worse than those of the undiagnosed group, although these are very small differences. It has been found that there is some confusion among people diagnosed regarding properly declared and certified gluten-free products, while most respondents believe that a strict gluten-free diet is the only effective treatment for the disease.
Background: Patients infected by coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), display various symptoms and severity of the clinical picture. Thus, the therapy and pathophysiology of this disease are a dilemma for health professionals and scientists. Objective: This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic protocols (the use of anticoagulants) in the treatment of COVID-19 patients of various severity of the clinical picture by monitoring coagulation markers (PT, INR, aPTT and D-dimer), as well as the impact of the type and number of comorbidities patients had on these markers. Methods: A total of 200 patients with a mild (n=76), moderate (n=70) or severe (n=54) clinical picture was included. Coagulation markers [PT (prothrombin time), INR (international normalized ratio), aPTT (activated partial thromboplastin time), D-dimer] were examined on three occasions: twice during hospitalization and once after hospital discharge. Anticoagulants used intrahospital were fraxiparine, rivaroxaban or unfractionated heparin. Posthospital, patients were taking either rivaroxaban or did not use any anticoagulants. For statistical analysis, SPSS 26.0 and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used, with a level of significance of α=0.05. Nonparametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Bonferroni) were applied and effect size (ES) was calculated. Results: Three anticoagulants used intrahospital caused a significant decrease in PT, INR and D-dimer and a significant increase in aPTT, especially in patients with a severe clinical picture, but the ES was the biggest with fraxiparine, then rivaroxaban, and lastly unfractionated heparin. Posthospital, rivaroxaban caused a significant decrease in PT, INR and D-dimer and a significant increase in aPTT, especially in patients with a severe clinical picture. Hypertension was the most common comorbidity in all patients, as well as in patients with a severe clinical picture. There was a statistically significant impact of the number of comorbidities patients had on D-dimer, and none on PT, INR and aPTT, but the highest number of comorbidities was in patients with a severe clinical picture. Conclusion: The use of anticoagulants, especially fraxiparine intrahospital and rivaroxaban posthospital, is justified in most COVID-19 cases as there is a significant correlation between this disease’s pathophysiology and the coagulation process. There is also a positive correlation between the severity of the clinical picture and the number of comorbidities patients have.

This paper presents an Artificial Nerual Network (ANN) for identification of postmenopausal women who are at high risk for developing osteopathy. While 800 patients took part in the study, 180 were used for network training. The following parameters were used: T-score (from −2,5 to −4), Age, Blood calcium level (<1,9 mmol/L), Blood vitamin D level (<20 ng/ml), Hip fracture, Spine fracture, Joint fracture, Glucocorticoids use, Smoking status, and BMI. The network has 10 input parameters and 1 output parameter. For the final architecture of expert system, a neural network with 20 neurons in hidden layer was chosen based on the training results. The signal from each neuron from hidden layer is directed to neuron in output layer, where this neuron processes the signal and gives desired output of the network. The sensitivity was 97,5%, specificity 70%, and accuracy 94,44%.
: Antigenotoxic and Antioxidative activites of Curcumin Modern biomedical science has proven beneficial effects of curcumin as potential therapeutic candidate for various conditions due to its pleiotropic and pharmacological properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate antigenotoxic effects of curcumin against cisplatin induced genotoxicity as well as its antioxidative effects. In vitro cytokinesis block micronuclei assay in human lymphocytes was used for evaluation of antigenotoxic properties of curcumin. Evaluation of antioxidative properties of curcumin was determined with 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging assay. Results demonstrated significant antigenotoxic and antioxidative properties of curcumin, dependent upon the tested concentrations. Consideration should be given to performing a study with broad dose interval of tested substances. Findings from the present study emphasized application of curcumin as potential antigenotoxic and antioxidative supplementary agent.
