Impact of premature rupture of the fetal membranes on fetomaternal outcome

Introduction: According to the literature 1% to 2% of all pregnancies and 30% of preterm births (earlier than 37 weeks) are due to the rupture of amniotic sac. Aim: The aim of this work was to evaluate correlation between premature rupture of amniotic sac with premature delivery, increased number of deliveries by Caesarean section, lower Apgar score in the first and the fifth minute, as well as birth of children with lower body weight. Methods: The study was retrospective, comparative, and the analyzed data were obtained in period from October 2013 through February 2014 at the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology “Jezero” in Sarajevo. The sample was divided into two groups – working group and control group, based on the fact whether or not the delivery was conducted before or after the 37 th week of pregnancy. The standard methods of descriptive statistics were performed for the data analysis. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the average mother´s age between compared groups. The number of C-sections was significantly higher in working group. The mean of the Apgar score in the first minute and in the fifth minute were significantly lower in working group compared to the control group. Newborns body weight in working group was significantly lower. Conclusion: Premature rupture of amniotic sac causes premature childbirth, delivery of infants with lower body weight and Apgar score, and increased number of deliveries by C-section. Keywords: amniotic sac, PROM, delivery
