Importance of Automatic Data Collection on Flow in the Development of Road Network

In order to facilitate sustainable and rational management of the primary road network in the Sarajevo Canton, it was necessary to establish a system of continuous traffic counting, which involves the systematic collection of data on traffic loads, the structure of the traffic flow, speed traffic flow, as well as the unevenness of the traffic load in space and time on the road and street network. The project includes 38 counting sites that are located on the primary road network of the Sarajevo Canton, of which the first phase of the project, in 2013 saw the setting of counters on seven micro locations. These devices provide information on the number (by lanes), category, speed and time intervals of the following vehicles, and the unevenness of the traffic load in certain time periods. The data are transmitted from the counter by general packet radio service (GPRS) communication to the server, which are further processed and they are the foundation of traffic forecasting, planning and designing of transportation systems and roads.
