With drinking water standards becoming more rigorous and increasing demands for additional water quantities, while water resources are becoming more polluted, mathematical models became an important tool to improve water treatment processes performance in the water supply system. Water treatment processes models reflect the knowledge of the processes and they are useful tools for water treatment process optimization, design, operator training for decision making and fundamental research. Unfortunately, in the current practice of drinking-water production and distribution, water treatment processes modeling is not successfully applied. This article presents a review of some existing water treatment processes simulators and the experience of their application and indicating the main weak points of each process. Also, new approaches in the modeling of water treatment are presented and recommendations are given for the work in the future.

The paper presents a model for numerical simulation of interaction between the fluid and the reinforced-concrete structure under seismic load for spatial 3D problems, with an emphasis of concrete dams. The model is based on the so called partition scheme for coupled (multi-field) problems. The model especially focuses on the concrete ageing effects, which has proven to be highly significant in the analysis of older structures. The paper starts with a brief description of the numerical model, which is followed by a more detailed description of the concrete ageing model, and by analysis of Jablanica hydropower plant (HPP) on which the validity of the model and related software was checked.

Control of potable water treatment plant (PWTP) is nowadays based on experience. The aim of this article is to show that model based control of treatment process is more efficient than process operation based on experience. Stimela environment is used for modeling of processes of potable water treatment. Application of the model was conducted on PWTP "Crkvice" in Zenica (BiH). This plant has used conventional rapid sand filters. By effective application of the model it is determined the optimal filter run time for different input turbidity of raw water. This results in the possibility of reducing the consumption of backwashing water, lower costs for its pumping and reducing the amount of coagulants. In the existing practice, based on experience, these benefits are not used.

This paper deals with synthesis of copolymer hydrogels of N-isopropilacrylamide, itaconic acid and chitosan. During synthesis, pH of the reaction solution and temperature were varied. It was found that reaction at higher temperature, above lower critical solution temperature (LCST) value of N-isopropilacrylamide resulted in a formation of polymer rich domains or aggregates in the matrix of loosely tied network, which cause a higher degree of swelling. Moreover, reaction pH also affects the degree of swelling and contraction of hydrogels owing to the different ionization of the ionic groups presence in hydrogel. The values of diffusion exponent, n, indicate non-Fickian kinetics corresponding to diffusion and relaxation of polymer chains. These hydrogels could be classified as macroporous hydrogels. Hence, it is possible to synthetize hydrogels of desired functionality which allow their application in different fields.

Prikazuje se stradanje korita i vodopada rijeke Plive te zahvati kojima su se kroz povijest pokušale sanirati nastale štete. Pri izradi idejnog rješenja prikazanog u ovom radu, pošlo se od ideje da se osigura globalna i lokalna stabilnost vodopada, a i njegova trajnost u dužem razdoblju. Opisani su i sanacijski zahvati duž korita i na vodopadu kojima se pokušalo zadovoljiti osnovni kriterij koji se odnosi na to da treba osigurati ponovno taloženje sedre u vodotoku rijeke Plive.
