Minarets, tall structures, connected or not to the mosque attract attention due to their specific architectural features. Vulnerability to seismic damage has been witnessed throughout history on tall and slender structures after earthquake ground motions. In that respect, it is of the utmost importance to investigate the dynamic characteristics and resilience of historical stone minarets. This paper aims to provide the results of an on-site dynamic investigation of a stone minaret in Mostar and deliver its seismic assessment. The minaret is part of the Tabačica mosque built at the turn of the 16th and 17th century in the City of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The on-site investigation comprised dynamic identification of the minaret by ambient vibration testing and qualitative estimation of the masonry wall by sonic pulse velocity testing. Besides the modal analysis a time-history analysis was performed by using the Applied Element Method (AEM), considered an appropriate tool for assessing the behavior of historic masonry structures. A good match is found between the first natural frequency obtained by the on-site investigation and the modal analysis which is a solid basis for further seismic assessment of the minaret as a slender tower-like structure. The concentration of stresses is observed at the transition zones.
The paper presents a diagnosis of the condition of the stadium FK Velež “Rođeni” in Mostar, which was built in period 2006-2008 and represents an important facility for the citizens of Mostar. The steps in diagnosing the condition of an existing structure are explained, including a collection of existing documentation, an inspection of the structure, test and calculations, and assessment and decision on further action. Drawings of the stadium were given, visual inspection of the stadium was performed and calculations of the current and future layout of the structure. The calculations were performed in software Tower 8 and with respect to European norms EN0, EN1, EN2, EN3 and EN8. A visual inspection revealed a large number of damages to the stadium, which were classified into specific groups. The mechanisms of destruction and classification were performed using EN 1504.
Dynamic analysis can be used to find dynamic displacements, time history, and the frequency content of the load. One analysis technique for calculating the linear response of structures to dynamic loading is a modal analysis. In modal analysis, we decompose the response of the structure into several vibration modes. A mode is defined by its frequency and shape. Structural engineers call the mode with the shortest frequency (the longest period) the fundamental mode. Holzer and Stodola's approximate methods for determining the forms and periods of oscillation for frame structures are presented in the paper. An approximation method, based on approximate relative stiffnesses of the storeys and the ground floor, is analyzed and proposed. The results obtained by the proposed approximate procedure do not greatly deviate from those obtained by more accurate calculations. It is therefore emphasized that the method can be used both in practice and for checking computer-based analysis of complex systems. At the end of the paper was given a comparison of the results obtained by approximate methods and some engineering software.
