A high-quality genofund of fruit species and varieties, which are the result of centuries-long adaptation and selection, characterises the Una – Sana Canton. Therefore, this work has included research on the thirty-one sites in eight municipalities (Bihac, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanski Petrovac, Bužim, Cazin, Sanski Most, Velika Kladusa) of the Una- Sana Canton. The aim is primarily to protect and preserve endangered fruit trees and genofund, whereby the first step in meeting these goals is the inventory of native species and varieties. The total of 275 native fruit accessions has been found at these sites, apples and pears being dominant. Most native fruit accessions are not commercially significant varieties. However, local inhabitants mainly use them in the processing and preparation of traditional products. Also, a high degree of tolerance of these accessions for particular diseases and pests was recorded, whereby these accessions represent an exceptional source of starting material for future breeding steps. Ballian, D., Mujagic-Pasic, A.: Morphological variability of the fruit and seed of wild cherry ( Prunus avium L.) in a part of its natural distribution in Bosnia and Herzegovina . Biologica Nyssana, 4 (1-2), December 2013: 15-17. The paper discusses morphological variability of the fruit and seed of wild cherry ( Prunus avium L.) which have been collected in 12 localities of its natural distribution in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 2,926 fruits have been collected, and the following properties have been studied: fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness, seed length, seed width and seed thickness. A discriminant analysis by groups formed according to classes of altitude and ecological and vegetation zoning has shown that there are no separations within the studied populations, which implies the possibility to use seed and planting material from different altitudes and ecological and vegetation zones within the studied area. Key words : Bosnia and Herzegovina, variability of the fruit and seed, wild chery
UDK 582.632.2:581.45(497.6 Bosanska krajina) An analysis of the morphological properties of the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) leaves has identified the presence of an intra-population and inter-population variability of the sweet chestnut. The material has been collected from 16 subpopulations in the region of Bosanska Krajina (Cazin, Bužim, and Velika Kladuša) and amounted to 4,380 leaves of equal dimensions. Their morphological features – blade length in mm (ŠPL), blade width in mm (DPL) and petiole length in mm (DPE) – have been measured. The shape of leaf base and depth of indentations of leaf edges have been established according to the descriptor for the sweet chestnut (UPOV 1989), while the ratios have been calculated based on the known values: leaf blade length/leaf blade width (ŠPL/DPL) and leaf blade width/total leaf length (ŠPL/UDL). The purpose of this research is to establish intra-population and inter-population variability of the natural sweet chestnut populations in the region of Bosanska Krajina on the basis of leaf morphology.
