An approach to traffic engineering and dimensioning of GPRS networks
As radio resources that belong to a GSM/GPRS network are limited, then there is a need for a more efficient use of available resources. This work gives guidelines for estimation of essential resources in GSM/GPRS network with downlink throughput as QoS attribute. Also, this work indicates advantages and disadvantages of certain engineering traffic methods in GSM/GPRS networks. Concretely, it is about the methods with a fix allocation of channels, on-demand allocation and the possibility of applying both methods together. Instead of GPRSim (1,2) we used network simulator ns2. According to the measured throughput, the number of users (MS) determines a work point and more over, the optimal number of channels and TRX units.
